V60 Brewing Guide: How to Make the Perfect Pour-Over at Home

Brewing coffee with a Hario V60 Coffee Dripper is one of the best ways to experience the full flavour of specialty coffee. The V60 produces a clean, bright cup that highlights the unique characteristics of each coffee.

At Ascapart Coffee, we love the V60 for showcasing the complexity of single-origin coffees. With a few simple steps, you can make café-quality pour-over coffee at home.

What You’ll Need

To brew a great V60 coffee, you’ll need:

  • V60 dripper

  • V60 paper filter

  • Freshly roasted coffee

  • Burr grinder

  • Gooseneck kettle (recommended)

  • Scales

  • Mug or coffee server

Using freshly roasted beans will always give the best results, so try to brew coffee within a few weeks of roasting.

Coffee to Water Ratio

A good starting point is:

15g coffee : 250g water

This is a 1:16 brewing ratio, which creates a balanced cup with good sweetness and clarity.

You can adjust this slightly depending on how strong you like your coffee.

Grind Size

For the V60, you want a medium grind, similar to the texture of coarse sand.

  • Too fine: brew will taste bitter and slow to drain

  • Too coarse: coffee may taste weak or sour

Grinding your coffee just before brewing will make a big difference to flavour.

Step-by-Step Brewing Method

1. Rinse the Filter

Place your paper filter into the V60 and rinse it with hot water.

This removes any paper taste and warms your brewing equipment. Discard the rinse water before brewing.

2. Add Coffee

Add 15g of ground coffee to the filter.

Gently shake the dripper so the coffee bed is level.

3. Bloom the Coffee

Start your timer and pour 30g of hot water evenly over the coffee.

Let it sit for 30 seconds.

This step is called the bloom and allows trapped gases from freshly roasted coffee to escape.

4. First Pour

Slowly pour water in a circular motion until you reach 150g of total water.

Pour gently and avoid pouring directly onto the paper filter.

5. Final Pour

Continue pouring until you reach 250g total water.

Try to keep your pour steady and consistent.

6. Let the Coffee Draw Down

Allow the water to pass through the coffee bed completely.

Your total brew time should be around 2:30 to 3:00 minutes.

Remove the dripper, swirl your coffee slightly, and enjoy.

Tips for Brewing Better V60 Coffee

Use fresh coffee
Coffee tastes best when brewed within 2–4 weeks of roasting.

Use filtered water
Better water leads to clearer flavours in the cup.

Pour slowly and evenly
A controlled pour helps extract the coffee evenly.

Adjust your grind size
If your brew tastes bitter, try a slightly coarser grind.
If it tastes sour, grind slightly finer.

Choosing Coffee for V60

The V60 works especially well with light to medium roasted single-origin coffees, where delicate flavour notes can really shine.

You’ll often notice tasting notes like:

  • citrus

  • berries

  • florals

  • honey sweetness

These coffees create a bright and vibrant cup when brewed as a pour-over.
